Microsoft Scrambles to Plug DRM Hole
Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 4:18PM A program called FairUse4WM (WM = Windows Media) has been seen making its way around the Internet. This program offers subscribers to Windows Media DRM protected files the ability to strip the DRM. Technologies offering "FairPlay" have long been the targets of hackers and computer geeks. When iTunes first released their DRM protected media, the "free media" community responded with Hymn which stripped the FairPlay DRM.
Micrsoft has already responded and on August 28th announced they expect to release a fix in the near term. This fix will patch the vulnerability in PlaysForSure, but no-one yet knows how. Microsoft is either going to push it down the pipes forcing it apon people, or offer it as (most likely a critical) Windows Update. Anybody notice a pattern here?
